My Parents...
On August 31, 2010 my parents will have been married for 36 years. The have been 2 of the most influential people in my life and for that I am grateful. A lot of who I am, good and bad, is due to that influence. So where do I begin. Well I have always like girls more than boys so I guess it is ladies first.
An Introduction My mother is the middle child of "Buster" and Doris. She grew up in a row house in Baltimore, MD and has 3 older sisters, one deceased, one younger sister, and one younger brother. She is a strong women, who has lived by a motto "You do what you have to"
My dad is the oldest of two. His parents, "Collie" and Golden, lived in Hanover, MD in a neighborhood called Matthewstown. If I was to sum my dad up in a motto it would be "Laugh and the whole world laughs with you... or at you."
What I learned from them
Work Hard
Both of my parents worked while I was growing up so working was something that I knew had to be done. They worked hard and provided for our family. From this I learned that if I wanted something you worked for it. They both wanted me to focus on my studies but my mom was the one who really drove this.
Play Hard
My dad was always the jokester but my mom played the straight man to his comic relief. There were evenings where my sides would hurt from laughing. When I was younger I remember my dad playing baseball and softball with the guys.
Focus on Your Family
My parents but everything on hold to take care of their family. I know that there were a lot of things that they wanted to do but they had plans for my brother and I. One of those things was making sure that I attended college.
One Random Thing About My Parents My dad loved to grill and I would often be outside with him while he cooked. I thought he was the ultimate grill master. One day, as a 30 yr old, while we were outside and I was using his grill I mentioned to my mother how well dad had done teaching me to grill. My mom replied, with a smile, "Of course he did, who do you think taught him?" IT turns out that my mom, the city mouse, taught my dad how to handle a grill. It was an amazing revelation to me.
So there you have it. I love my parents and will always honor them.
