<p>One thing we do know is that it is ok not to be fine. &nbsp;We resolved that issue together years ago because we know that ultimately it is not in our hands anyway. &nbsp;God has been so very faithful to us that even in our pain we can laugh because our God is bigger than all of it. &nbsp;We also recognized our own privilege and that our issues are not nearly as large as the loom.</p>

<p>So I am praying for you dear reader. &nbsp;That you would know the faithfulness of God even in your pain. &nbsp;That you would seek Him first.  </p>

Editing by Me.</td></tr></tbody></table>As we are ensconced in a biblically inspired movie cycle with the likes of Noah, and Son of God as well as more "Christian" themed stuff like God's not Dead and the upcoming Heaven is for Real I am having to put my God on film idea to the test.</p>

<p>The challenge that I have with movies/TV series/media that claim biblical inspiration or themes is that instead of letting the story stand on it focuses on minor details and ignores the major story. &nbsp;Much like what we do when we focus on secondary issues and make them primary.</p>

<p>There is also the fact that some narrative elements are completely made up or wrong in light of the actual text. &nbsp;I know that studying the scriptures is not as "exciting" as watching Russell Crowe as Maximus Noah and the Nephilim but don't let this be the only time you think about the text.</p>

<p>We are called to meditate on God's Word day and night. &nbsp;It really does inform the decisions you make as well as the media you consume. </p>

<p>With all of that said what are my thoughts on the movie? &nbsp;I don't have any. &nbsp;I love storytelling and I am "interested" in seeing Darren Aronofsky's vision. &nbsp;I do not see it as some grand evangelism tool. &nbsp;I didn't for Passion, Son Of God, or any other movie. &nbsp; I also do not see it as some grand gesture by Hollywood to reach out to Christians.</p>

Anyabwile. His name is Rev. Francis James Grimké. He was born to a slave mother, Nancy Weston, in 1850 and her owner, Henry Grimké. The elder Grimké was a well respected Jurist in South Carolina. He helped to draft the Slave codes that I mentioned yesterday in our discussion of Daniel Payne. In Lift Up Thy Voice: The Sarah and Angelina Grimké Family’s Journey from Slaveholders to Civil Rights Leaders by Mark Perry, which highlights the rise of Francis Grimké's older sisters, Sarah recalled her father scolding her harshly for teaching her slave to read. The Grimké Sisters would go on to become leading abolitionists.</p>

<p>When the elder Grimké died Francis and his 2 brothers were given to his half-brother with the "understanding" that they would be regarded as family. This would, for a time, provide them with some level of freedom. After a few years, however, this half-brother attempted to give to his wife as her personal slaves. Francis avoided this by joining the Confederate Army and evading his older half-brother until Emancipation.</p>

<p>From this tumultuous start Francis and his surviving brother Archibold moved to the North (Mass) and were educated. Francis went on to study medicine at Jefferson College in PA where he graduated as Valedictorian in 1870. The following year he began to study Law at Howard University in Washington, DC.</p>

<p>At Howard we felt called to Christian Ministry and he left pursued Theological Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary under Charles Hodge who was the president at the time. Acknowledging God as revealed in the Scriptures he wrote this in his journal in 1936, "I accept, and accept without reservation, the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as God’s Word, sent to Adam’s sinful race and pointing out the only way by which it can be saved. [W]ithout the Holy Scriptures and what they reveal, there is no hope for humanity. To build on anything else is to build on the sand."</p>

<p>After leaving Princeton in 1878 he became the Reverend of the 15th Street Presbyterian Church in DC. He would spend almost all of his 60 years in Christian Ministry at 15th Street. His ministry spanned from Reconstruction to the post-World War I era. While first and foremost to him was his calling to be a Pastor he also served as a Trustee at Howard University, helping to found the NAACP, advocating for suffrage and other public aims.</p>

<p>From his pulpit he continued to train and disciple. His sermon, "The Afro-American Pulpit and Its Relation to Race Elevation" called the African American Churches to move beyond the levity, emotionalism, and frivolity of the day to a high calling of Christian Discipleship and Service. As a counter point his sermon, "Christianity and Race Prejudice" called out the White church of that era for its duplicity on race related issues.</p>

<p>Again this is longer than I intended but I hope that you have been blessed by learning about these Pastors. Rev. Grimké reminds me that the calling to be a Pastor is a serious one and that there is no separation in your life. Born in 1811 during the height of slavery he and his family were not slaves. His parents were free blacks living in South Carolina. They were also devout members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.By age 10 he had lost both of his parents and was being raised by his Aunt. It was not the practice to educate blacks during this time but Payne was introduced to the Members Moralist Society. This Group, established by free blacks, was committed to “educate orphan or indigent colored children, and also to provide for their necessary wants.”By 1829, at 19, he had opened his first school teaching children and adults alike. This first school failed but he regrouped and started again and by 1835 he was teaching and housing 60 students.In 1835 however this school ended when the South Carolina Legislature passed South Carolina General Assembly passed Act No. 2639, An Act to Amend the Law Relating to Slaves and Free Persons of Color. This act made it illegal to be taught as a slave and also made it illegal to teach slaves. By penalty of fine and the lash.He would go on to founding another school in Philadelphia, become the 6th Bishop of the A.M.E. Church. On becoming the Bishop he noted, "I trembled from head to foot, and wept. I knew that I was unworthy the office, because I had neither the physical strength, the learning, nor the sanctity which makes one fit for such a high, holy, and responsible position. . . . I prayed earnestly that God would take away my life rather than allow me to be put into an office for which I felt myself so utterly unfit." He held the position of Pastor in high esteem.He stressed educating yourself as a high goal. He also felt that theological training was as important. I wish I had more space but I will cap it off with this. He was insistent that we examine those who would accept the high calling of Pastor. It is something that I struggled with and still do. He said this, "Whenever a young man comes forward, and tells us that he is called to the ministry, let us examine him rigidly, according to our excellent discipline and the requisitions of God’s word. It is not enough that he tells us God has called him; let him show the evidences of his call. Some of us are too credulous. If a man tells us that he is called to this work, we believe without proof;without any qualification, we are ready to push him into the sacred office. His say so is not enough." Payne concluded with this, “Some men have gifts, but no graces. Others have graces, but no gifts. He was an African American preacher born in 1753. After being abandoned at 5 months he was raised by a white family as an indentured servant. After his indenture he volunteered as a Minuteman in 1774 and joined the Continental Army in 1776 where he fought for America's independence. He was licensed to preach in 1780 after formal ministry training in Hebrew and Greek. He was ordained in 1785, becoming the first African American ordained by a religious body. In 1804 he was awarded a honorary Master's Degree by Middlebury College which was another first.After being denied a pastorate in Connecticut despite serving faithfully for 5 years Haynes would go on to Pastor the West Parish of Rutland, Vermont for 30 years.He preached 5500 sermons and presided over 1500 sabbath services.At his funeral in 1833 he had these self-penned words read."Here lies the dust of a poor hell-deserving sinner, who ventured into eternity trusting wholly on the merits of Christ for salvation. In the full belief of the great doctrines he preached while on earth, he invites his children and all who read this, to trust their eternal interest on the same foundation”Lemuel Haynes was called the Black Puritan due to the influence of folks like George Whitfield and John Owen.I hope you don't mind this long post. My darling wife teases me because I can just as easily enjoy a night of Celtic worship as a I can a Christian hip hop concert.  One of the ways that God touches people is through music.  Music, in whatever style or genre, has a way of speaking to us. I have learned the secretof being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.” - Philippians 4:12-13 “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do…” - 1 Peter 1:15So over the last few weeks we have been looking at some commonly held myths about Christianity and just like on the show myth busters we put them to the test.  What is a myth?  The well regarded Dictionary.com tells us that a myth is a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, especially one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature.   We have adapted this words and created another phrase called the urban legend.  These are ideas that have grown from a grain of truth into something that is unbelievable, but we tell the stories because we love the idea of something larger than life.When it comes to religion there are a lot of myths out there.  There are lots of things that people believe that simply aren’t true.  Next week we will be discussing several of the myths about God but don’t let me get ahead of myself.  This week we will be looking at a myth that hits us right in our comfort zones.  The myth that I will be discussing this morning is the myth that God wants me happy. I say that this myth strikes at our comfort zones as Americans our happiness is paramount.  It Is even in our founding documents.  “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  Now I know that happiness in that context is different than how we view it now.  At a fundamental level happiness is important to us.  You’ll hear in on Christian TV, in books, even in sermons.  It is a message that feels very good.  It seems right.God wants me happy.  God has good things in for you.  God wants you to enjoy your life, to prosper in every way.  The problem with a theology like this is that it elevates us to a place where God is serving us.  This is where the idea of a celestial Santa Claus comes from and if he doesn’t deliver than we are mad at Him.  This idea is not new though.  In Paul’s second letter to Timothy he says this, “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”  The truth is that God is a good God.  He loves to give good gifts to His children.  We however are not here to be served by God.  We are here to serve Him.We started to teach our girls the catechism for young children.  The first 3 questions are the ones that stick out to me.  The first is, Who Made You.  The answer, of course, is God.  The second is, what else did God make? That answer is that God made all things.  The third question is, why did God make you and all things?  This answer is at the crux of what I plan to share with you today.  It is the counter to the church of individual happiness.  Why did God make everything?  He made everything for His Glory.  It is not about our individual happiness.  It is about His Glory and His Kingdom.  The truth is that we serve God not the other way around.God has called us to be Holy as He is Holy.  Peter writes this in 1 Peter 1:15-16, “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”  God knows that our happiness will not lead us to be like him.  We will do things that are the opposite of God’s Word.  Take a look at marriage.  We no longer feel that we need to be faithful to one spouse.  As singles we have these desires that God gave us.  He wants me to be happy, right?  But sinful happiness is not what God is calling us to.  God knows that happiness is fleeting.  It is based on circumstances.  If everything falls into place than I am happy, but let one thing be out of place. Now the pouting starts.This leads us to Paul and our main text for this message.  In Philippians 4 we have a letter written from prison by a prisoner awaiting his sentence.  He tells the brothers at Philippi the secret.  Take a look at verses 12-13, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.”So here is a situation that is not one that would bring you happiness, being in prison.  There is nothing happy about being in prison.  I think that this is something that we can all understand.  Whether you have ever been involved with a prison ministry, been to prison or visited someone there.  Nothing about it brings a smile.  But here is Paul saying that he has learned to be content.  What is this secret?  To see is we have to jump back to the beginning of this book.  Paul found contentment in his purpose.  What was the purpose that shaped his life?  Paul was called to take the Gospel to the Gentiles.  It is in that calling that he received his strength.  It is through that faith that he was able to say in the first chapter of Philippians, “Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.  As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ (v12-13)”.  He was content in his position, “Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly (v14).”God is doing a work in us for His Glory.  Every situation is known by God and is accomplishing something in us all.  God uses trouble to build character in us.  If you look in Romans 5 verses 3-4, “Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”  God is sanctifying us through the situations and circumstances of life.  See 2 Corinthians 4:17, “Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”God uses temptationsto teach us obedience. Jesus said in John 14:15, “if you love me you will obey what I command.”  That is a hard teaching.  Especially today because this is time we are living in.  Temptation screams out of every set of ear buds, every billboard, every TV, every screen we watch or carry.  It pulls us in and doesn’t want to let go.  God know that we will be tempted.  Take a look in 1 Corinthians 10:13 where it says, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”  What is more important to you?  Loving your Lord and Savior or what is calling you?God uses trespassesto teach us to forgive. In Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”  Again another hard teaching, is God referring to that guy who cut me off in traffic?  What about the person who stole from me?  What about the person who ridicules me because I follow Christ, calls me a bigot or attacks me physically for my faith?  It is in those situations that I can be truly content.  In Matthew 5:11 it says, “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.”  The greek word translated to blessed, Makarios, means More than Happy.  God suffered for the sake of the message.  How much more so will we?  How do we begin to increase our appetite for God’s holiness and grow in contentment?  How do we go after everything that God has for us?  Here are a few ways you can impact your environment.  Choose the relationships around you.  In Proverbs 13:20 it says, “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”  You cannot walk this road alone.  We are family and no matter what we need each other.  Ephesians 4:16 illustrates this for us where it reads, “The whole Body is fitted together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole Body is healthy and growing and full of love.”Confront the issues that stop you.  Job had to confront his issues.  Bitterness was beginning to grip him as he lamented in chapter 21 verses 23-25 he laments, “Some men stay happy until the day they die...others have no happiness at all; they live and die with bitter hearts.”  We need to deal with our sin, our hurts, our unbelief and move on.  Isaiah cries out to us in chapter 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”Cultivate the purpose within you.  There is a race that we all must run.  We need to run OUR race and run it to win.  Paul explained this to the Ephesians leaders as he left them in Acts 20:24, “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me–the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.  Find the purpose that God has put in front of us all.  Nothing satisfies, not money, success, fame.  Only what we do for Christ will last.Lastly commit to the One who loves you.  It is not about us.  It is all about Him. Turn to the back of the book and even this is made plain.  Revelation 4:11 reads, “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power.
